Tokyo Bubble Tea was one of my go-to restaurants when I was still working in BGC Taguig. It still is one of my favorites which is why during one of my seldom trips to the area since the pandemic, I made sure to pay it a visit. I was battling inside my head on which of my favorites should I order. I have been living in an area in Bulacan where the food delivery service is kinda scarce so I have not had a taste of this restaurant for a year. Among my top picks were the Teriyaki Chicken Doria and Chicken Katsu Omurice but the winner which got to be served on my table was the Black Pepper Chicken With Kimchi Rice. Let me share some of the good reasons to love this dish.
—Generous serving
Tokyo Bubble Tea is known for their big servings and the same is true for this dish. It is served with a generous portion of kimchi rice, grilled chicken and black pepper sauce. Although, I think it used to be a lot more as I remember it but their current serving still doesn’t disappoint. It still is a bang for the buck and a filling one for that matter.
—Distinct flavor and smoky taste
Unlike the grilled chicken we Filipinos usually enjoy, this one has a different take. I like the contrasting flavors of the kimchi rice and the black pepper sauce. There’s sour and spicy then there’s savory and peppery over a perfectly charred but mildly spiced chicken. And oh! Did I mention it comes with a sunny egg? I know we all love that runny yoke on our rice, don’t we?
—Sizzling hot
This dish is served in a sizzling plate probably so you would see how it beautifully sizzles while pouring the black pepper sauce onto the kimchi rice and chicken. The flavor becomes more interesting when it’s a little burnt too, much like how one would enjoy a bibimbap.
Of course, this dish will not be complete without the black pepper sauce. I’m not usually fond of gravy but this one is an exception. It’s oozing with all that black pepper goodness from the smell to its taste. There’s no other thing that could complement this whole dish more perfectly. I’m always for soy sauce with some calamansi and chili on my grilled chicken but I’ll ditch them only for this.
—The Kimchi Rice
Rice is a staple to us Filipinos. We love it simply steamed but there is no denying we love it more when it’s stir fried with some veggies, eggs, and bits of meat. And what of Kimchi Rice? I think it’s amazing especially that I love this Korean side dish too. I know anything goes perfectly with rice. Even that leftover oil in our pan after cooking adobo or tocino. And despite the kimchi being our not so typical rice partner, I gotta admit that it definitely elevates the experience.
There you have it, lovelies! The next time you wonder what to get for lunch, try Tokyo Bubble Tea and get yourself the Black Pepper Chicken With Kimchi Rice. I guarantee you won’t regret it. See you on the next food trip. Ciao!
